Social-Ecological Research at ISOE
ISOE is an independent institute that develops social-ecological concepts for sustainable development. As an innovative scientific think tank we undertake transdisciplinary research for society, policy makers and industry – providing support for sound decision-making processes.
We find sustainable solutions to complex issues. For people and their environment.
We take a targeted and case-specific approach to the pressing global problems of water shortage, climate change, environmental destruction, loss of biodiversity, and land degradation. In finding sustainable solutions to concrete conflicts we take into account social and economic as well ecological conditions. Social ecology provides the theoretical basis for this work.
We seek to involve stakeholders and their knowledge. For hands-on future concepts.
We integrate the various interests and knowledge of stakeholders into the research process. This way we help ensure that problem-solving concepts are better accepted and implemented in the field. We are convinced that the complex problems of the future can be best solved via integrative methods.
We communicate openly and proactively. For better understanding and greater commitment.
We see it as one of our main tasks to present our research results to both scientific and societal audiences for discussion. To this end we publish regularly, provide consultation and engage in public discussions and debates.
We create space - for fundamental changes within society and the sciences.
We are critical – and self-critical. How else can we prevent today's solutions from becoming the problems of tomorrow? Instead of pursuing rigid objectives, we see change in terms of corridors for possible and desirable developments. This is the best way to create alternative concepts, both in theory and in practice.
We practice co-operation. With our partners and with our staff.
We are an active partner in many different networks and co-operative schemes. We see ourselves as a learning organisation, and feel committed to a responsible and participatory approach to dealing with power and influence.
We engage in transdisciplinary research. For new perspectives and innovative solutions.
We see ourselves as an institution at the crossroads between consultancy-oriented and academic science, between basic and applied research, between the natural and the social sciences, and between the sciences and society.
We are the social-ecological centre of competence for transdisciplinary sustainability research.
