State and perspectives of ecological innovations in the textile sector
Results from the BMBF Project "Knowledge Transfer"
Firstly, the discussion paper presents the ecological problems in the life cycle of textiles, which were found out by various analyses of textile substance and material flows and by an interview study with experts. The problems, discussed are seen as starting points for ecological innovations.
Secondly, the main directions of ecological innovation, which are at present pursued by textile manufactures, are described systematically and the different ways of ecological improvement are discussed. Based on an estimate of experts the relevant ecological effects of the strategies and their range of influence are evaluated.
A comparison between the ecological problems and the ecological innovations in the textile product chain shows that the ecological improvement activities are limited to few components of the known environmental dimensions and suffer form considerable deficits.
As a consequence, some suggestions and further tasks for an effective ecological innovation of the textile life cycle are presented.
