Consumers complain about unadequate supply of ecological product alternatives; on the other hand ecological product offers do not encounter the expected demand. Consumer (user) involvement in ecological innovation processes seems to be an opportunity to overcome this gap between supply and demand of ecological products.
The important role of customer involvement for stimulating innovations has been recognised in numerous studies. However, in product innovation processes consumer involvement has been widely neglected so far. In the main part of the paper we review different practised (resp. developed) user involvement processes in technological or product innovation. Conclusions are drawn for the improvement of involvement processes : It should be cared for an equilibrium in resource distribution (information, financial or time resources) between the participating actors in order to enable consumers to participate on an equal basis. Users' knowledge might be used as an important factor for initialising innovations. To enable the compliance with the points mentioned above, participative innovation processes should be accompanied by intermediary organisations.
