On Monday, September 28, the European workshop

Water for Integration - Integration for Water: Challenges for European Water Research and Implications for Research Policy

organized by the Institute for Social-Ecological Research (ISOE) in cooperation with the European Water Partnership (EWP) took place in Brussels.

With its focus on water the workshop addressed one of the most explosive societal issues today - an issue that needs to be valued in its economic, social, ecological and cultural dimensions. The workshop aimed to offer insights into how integrated water research might help to meet the challenges water problems around the world pose. It addressed key issues related to water, explored the requirements and barriers for integration in current water research, and facilitated an open exchange between science and policy. Participants from science, European institutions, research funding agencies and the private sector called on politicians to force integrated research in the water sector, on researchers to launch joint initiatives and to look beyond the water cycle as Thomas Kluge from ISOE subsumed in his closing remark. With regard to recommendations for future EU research policy, the discussion revealed the urgent needs for strengthening adequate funding schemes or joint calls for integrated research; transparent quality criteria, guiding documents and evaluation methods, an intermediate platform between science, decision makers and stakeholders; and taking account for already existing knowledge and better knowledge sharing.
