MobiHarz – mobility management for short-term holidaymakers in the Harz Mountains

The MobiHarz project group has developed a concept for the Harz Mountains region outlining how an ecological public transport system and tourism can be combined.

Research approach

The resulting mobility concept for the Harz Mountains guarantees the sustainability of the region. In designing it, the project team developed proposals as to how the public transport system could be optimised and how multi-optional mobility offerings could be created. In addition to this, the scientists involved made suggestions concerning the range of services and leisure activities available as well as to the provision of information.
ISOE developed a target group model to serve as the basis for the concept. In doing so, it referred to the mobility styles approach which, besides the objective aspects of traffic situation and traffic behaviour, also includes areas such as orientations, values and motives.

Background

The low mountain range of the Harz region fulfils an important leisure function for the nearby towns and cities. The holiday region does however suffer from the fact that most visitors arrive by car and continue to use it for getting around. The increasing volume of leisure traffic by car is having a negative impact on the environment and the recreational quality of the region.
