Components of drugs used by humans: Possible actions for reducing water contamination

Drugs are in many cases an indispensable part of a problem-free and healthy life. However, it has become clear that the widespread use of drugs has had its dark side, namely, their effects on the environment. Since the beginning of the 1990’s research has indicated the presence of a wide range of both human and veterinarian pharmaceuticals in surface water, ground water and even in drinking water. An increasing amount of data indicates, moreover, that certain substances can produce negative effects in animals and plants. From a scientific point of view, however, it is still not clear what the risks for humans actually are. The brochures available from the Institute will provide for the first time praxis relevant, workable suggestions for dealing in a responsible way with the contamination of water by human pharmaceuticals. The brochures may be downloaded.  ...  more
