Real-world Laboratories

We use the transdisciplinary research approach of real-world laboratories to generate knowledge on how to shape social transformations towards greater sustainability and how to initiate them.

To this end, researchers work together with practitioners to carry out “real-world experiments” within a limited time and space frame. This means that we test and experience various measures and solutions together with people “on the ground”. Our goal is to stimulate learning and change processes and in turn also to learn from them. These trials are systematically observed and analyzed by the research team. Our scientists regularly conduct real-world laboratories, for example in the field of mobility. Here, citizens can try out alternatives to their own cars and thus acquire new mobility routines. Based on the experiences gained by the participants in the real-world laboratories, we then develop measures or recommendations for action.
