Training scientists for transdisciplinary research
In September, 2024 ISOE was commissioned by the Austrian Science Fund FWF to offer scientists training in transdisciplinary research.
Future-oriented impulses and widely supported social solutions are the basis for a sustainable transformation of our society and its economy. We see ourselves as pioneers of this change.
With the help of transdisciplinary research we develop the necessary knowledge together with stakeholders from the field. To then ensure that this knowledge is having a broad impact, we offer a wide range of advisory, dialog and transfer services to science, politics, civil society, municipalities and companies.
We are partners in regional, national and international research associations.
In our research, we develop theoretical, content-related and methodical innovations. We publish our findings in renowned scientific journals and present them at national and international conferences. We present our research results both within the transdisciplinary, social-ecological research community and in disciplinary fields which gives us the opportunity to contribute to a broad scientific dialogue. Through our consulting and capacity-building offerings for scientists, research institutions, and funding organizations, we make a significant contribution to scientific advancement in transdisciplinary sustainability research, particularly with regard to transdisciplinary methods and approaches.
Based our long-standing research expertise, we advise policymakers and committees at all levels, from the municipal level to national and international policy.
We offer scientifically based, practical recommendations for action as well as customized bases for decision-making that address specific needs in political processes. If required, we can thus provide you as a political decision-maker with expert advice in parliamentary committees, provide you with specific expertise for your institution , and develop innovative concepts for sustainable policies. This will enable you to make well-founded and future-oriented decisions that not only have a short-term impact but also create long-term added value for society.

Citizens and civil society actors are crucial to the success of social-ecological transformations.
In various communication and transfer formats, we address current debates and offer the latest research findings on topics such as biodiversity, climate adaptation, water, mobility, and pollutant risks to citizens and civil society organizations. In learning and experiential settings, we point out opportunities for action thus making transformation tangible.
Our events as part of the Frankfurt Citizen University are aimed at a diverse audience from academia, society, politics, and business.
More
Cities, towns and rural districts play a crucial role in shaping socio-ecological transformation.
At the same time, they face enormous challenges due to tight municipal finances, demographic change, digitalization and climate change. We advise political decision-makers, as well as municipal administrations and companies, offering them scientifically based analyses, practical recommendations for action and customized concepts on the topics of climate protection and climate adaptation, mobility, water and wastewater, urban development and housing, as well as biodiversity conservation. That way, we place a strong emphasis on acceptance and solution orientation.

Companies are currently facing major challenges. They have to adapt their business models to conditions such as climate change or the decline in biodiversity and develop innovative, sustainable solutions that are economically viable and can be credibly communicated.
One also has to bear in mind that sustainable supply chains require investments and complex internal adjustments. What’s more, in order to anchor sustainable thinking at all levels of a company, a cultural shift is needed while at the same time, customers and society have growing expectations in terms of responsible behavior. We support companies and business associations in analyzing and evaluating these challenges and in implementing necessary change processes. We develop solutions that are research-based yet practice-oriented and collaboratively develop sustainable business models.
