In July 2010 the launch of the new BMBF initiative "Climate change and adaptive land management in Africa" took place. The goal is to build up a long-term research infrastructure in Africa via regional competence centres. For the German Minister of Research, Annette Schavan, this is the “prelude to a new dimension in collaborative research”. Over the next two years, the BMBF will be investing 5.1 million euros, and up to 100 million euros for the subsequent development phase.

ISOE is involved in the setting up of the Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL), whose planned radius extends to Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and South Africa. Our primary focus here is to contribute to Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) and the development of sustainable urban water infrastructure systems.
