BioKompass – Communication and participation for the societal transformation towards bioeconomy
The aim of the project is to support the transformation process towards a sustainable, bio-based economy based on natural cycles.
The project "BioKompass - Communication and Participation for the Societal Transformation towards a Bioeconomy" aimed to support transformation processes towards a bioeconomy, i.e. a sustainable, biobased circular economy. However, this concept is controversially discussed in both science and society. BioKompass focused on communicating information and on stimulating opinion formation and a sociatal debate on the topic of bioeconomy. The core of the project comprised participatively developed visions of the future for a bio-based economy. These visions of the future formed the basis for various participation and communication formats geared at school students and teachers as well as other target groups in the museum sector. The text at hand is a concept for the accompanying evaluation of the explorative development of these participation and communication formats. The aim of the evaluation was to assess the performance of the formats and to clarify the prerequisites for a transfer to other contexts. The approach and the criteria of the evaluation were adapted to the specific topic of the transformation towards a bio-based economy. The concept was developed in July 2018 and reflects the state of the debate at that time.

Transdisciplinarity is essential for transformation-oriented sustainability research because the complex challenges associated with social-ecological transformations cannot be solved within the boundaries of individual disciplines. These challenges require the collaboration of natural, social, and engineering sciences and the humanities, as well as of actors from politics, business, and civil society.
